Due to the characteristics of high hardness, high compressive strength, and good wear resistance,  diamond  grinding wheels are ideal tools for grinding hard and brittle materials and hard alloys. They not only have high efficiency and precision, but also have characteristics such as good roughness, low tool consumption, and long service life. At the same time, they can also improve the labor environment.

Dressing of diamond grinding wheels

Grinding wheel dressing refers to the process of using a dressing tool to shape or remove the dull surface of the grinding wheel, in order to restore the grinding function and correct geometric shape of the working surface. Timely and correct dressing of grinding wheels is an indispensable and important step in improving grinding efficiency and ensuring grinding quality.

Compared with ordinary grinding wheels, diamond grinding wheels not only have high grinding efficiency, low grinding force, and low grinding temperature, but also can avoid surface burns and cracks of the workpiece; Moreover, the grinding quality is good, the machining accuracy is high, the grinding tool consumption is low, the service life is long, and the machining cost is low.

Except for electroplating metal bonded diamond grinding wheels, which generally do not require dressing due to their special manufacturing process, resin bonded diamond grinding wheels, ceramic bonded diamond grinding wheels, and metal bonded diamond grinding wheels are all multi-layer abrasives. The accuracy of the grinding tool is determined by the dressing process, and the dressing quality directly affects its grinding performance.

The above three types of grinding wheels need to be trimmed in the following situations:

1. Before using a new grinding wheel

In order to expose the diamond abrasive particles on the surface of the grinding wheel from the binder to form cutting edges, the manufacturing of the grinding wheel did not achieve the desired geometric size and accuracy; Due to the misalignment between the axis of the grinding wheel and the axis of the flange, the axis of the grinding tool does not coincide with the rotation axis of the grinding machine spindle, resulting in deviation.

2. During the use of grinding wheels

Due to uneven wear, the geometric accuracy of the grinding wheel does not meet the usage requirements; The working surface is blocked by grinding debris and cannot be ground normally; The dullness of diamond abrasive particles on the surface is unfavorable.

So, what should diamond grinding wheels be trimmed with?

Diamond grinding wheel dressing generally involves methods such as diamond pen dressing, diamond rolling wheel dressing, grinding, and rolling.

1. Trim with a diamond pen

According to the particle situation on the diamond grinding wheel, choose a suitable diamond pen, which can be chain shaped, layered, row shaped, or powder shaped. The pen uses alloy bonding agent, which can re bond the particles on the diamond grinding wheel to achieve the purpose of grinding. It is the most commonly used dressing method.

2. Trim with rolling wheel

Rolling wheels are made by using electroplating or powder metallurgy methods to embed a large number of diamond particles on the surface of hard alloy wheels. During the rotation process of rolling wheels, some uneven abrasive particles on the surface of the diamond wheel can be crushed or detached, allowing the diamond wheel to maintain cutting performance. The trimming operation is relatively simple.

3. Grinding wheel dressing method

Use low-speed rotating superhard silicon carbide grinding wheels and high-speed rotating grinding wheels to achieve the purpose of dressing.

4. Roller trimming method

Using hard alloy discs, a set of rollers consisting of wavy white cast iron discs or hardened steel plates with grooves, and dressing them with grinding wheels for rolling and extrusion. The roller is usually manually operated on the trimming fixture, which has high trimming efficiency and is suitable for the trimming of coarse grinding wheels.

Selection method of diamond grinding wheel

1. The resin bonded diamond grinding wheel has weak bonding strength, so it has good self sharpening performance during grinding, is not easy to block, has high grinding efficiency, low grinding force, and low grinding temperature. The disadvantages are poor wear resistance, high grinding tool wear, and is not suitable for heavy-duty grinding.

2. Ceramic bonded diamond grinding wheels have better wear resistance and bonding strength than resin bonded wheels, with sharp cutting, high grinding efficiency, less heating and blockage, small thermal expansion, easy control of accuracy, and disadvantages such as rough grinding surface and high cost.

3. Metal bonded diamond grinding wheels have high bonding strength, good wear resistance, low wear, long service life, low grinding cost, and can withstand large loads, but have poor self sharpening and are prone to blockage.

4. The particle size of the abrasive has a certain impact on the blockage and cutting amount of the grinding wheel. Compared with fine sand particles, coarse sand particles have a greater depth of penetration and increase the wear of the abrasive cutting edge. Conversely, the grinding wheel is prone to blockage.

5. The hardness of grinding wheels has a significant impact on blockage. High hardness grinding wheels have high thermal conductivity, which is not conducive to surface heat dissipation and is beneficial for improving machining accuracy and durability.

6. The selection of grinding wheel concentration is an important factor, which has a significant impact on grinding efficiency and processing costs. If the concentration is too low, it will affect efficiency, and conversely, abrasive particles are prone to detachment.
